“Quincy in his blood”

H.A. "Alie" Shaughnessy, III has Quincy in his blood. His grandparents lived in Merrymount for years, and back in the late 1950s, his grandfather Herbert ran for city council. "I think I have political blood in my veins from my grandfather," Alie recently told the Quincy Sun.After graduating from Northeastern University with his business degree, Alie bought his first house in Quincy in 1983 and has lived in Quincy ever since, most recently in Squantum.

Alie's story isn't just about success—it's about “getting back up”. After 45 years in the construction industry, he knows what it means to make tough decisions. He's owned Alley Cat Crane Service, Inc., worked as a full-time Local 4 union crane operator, and learned lessons about resiliency you "couldn't get at Harvard.”

Alie lost a business due to betrayal by an employee and had to declare bankruptcy. Instead of giving up, he put his work boots back on—as he has every morning for years—and started over. He understands the financial stress families live with every day, and believes service on the Council will allow him to give back to the community that has given him so much.

These days, you'll find Alie asking the tough questions on the Quincy Planning Board, where he's served for two years. He prides himself on asking difficult questions of developers and sees himself as a steward of the city, responsible for ensuring that the decisions we make today are ones we, and the generations that follow, can live with tomorrow.

As Quincy approaches its 400th anniversary, Alie sees challenges ahead. That’s why he supports responsible development that balances growth with quality of life, with less reliance on Washington. Losing his earlier business also drove home for Alie the special responsibility of being a steward of taxpayer dollars. “It’s essential to invest those dollars on things that lift people up and elevate our great City,” Alie said. “People work hard to pay their bills, including taxes, and our elected leaders must never lose sight of that.”

A life member of the Squantum Yacht Club and the Elks, and proud supporter of the Nickerson American Post, Alie embodies community involvement. With three adult children and one grandson, he's invested in Quincy's future. He respectfully asks for your vote on September 2nd.
